Reviving the lost spaces under urban highways and bridges: an empirical study

2019

Purpose The fast development of urban movement infrastructures has created neglected urban places in cities. This study aims to provide users’ preferences for designing lost spaces that are a by-product of elevated urban highways (UHs) and bridges to develop a conceptual model for better environmental design. Design/methodology/approach This research is conducted by a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase, to explore the citizen’s environmental preferences based on the Q-sort technique and in-depth interviews, the ideas of 50 users were considered up to data saturation. The preferences of people for designs under urban bridges were extracted by conten…

Automated highway systems and hard-shoulders running: A case study

2016

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the increase of capacity of existing motorway resulting from the implementation of relatively new traffic control strategies, as the automated highway systems (AHS) and the hard-shoulder running (HSR). Was examined the Italian motorway A22, belonging to Trans-European Road Network, corridor Helsinki - La Valletta. Many traffic surveys were done (year 2014) in several road sections. For each of them have been carried out the flow diagrams, the traffic flow parameters (capacity C, free flow speed vf,jam density kjam) and the relationship between flow rate of lane (right lane Qright and passing lane Qpass) and total flow rate Qt. The current carriag…

2011

The article takes Zachary Baqué's study of Los Angeles in the films of David Lynch as a starting point to explore David Lynch's Hollywood movies. The author contends that the films offer more than a satirical representation of a corrupt, unhealthy system which threatens dreams and artistic creativity, or a parodic play on Hollywood genre and narrative conventions. Rather, Hollywood is a character, a presence, revealed as both horizontal and vertical, physical and abstract, evoking the city, the studio system, cinema and dreams, so that the satire, the visual motifs and clichés and the topography of Hollywood, and the references to Hollywood films, constitute a complex fabric of subjectivity…

Potentialities of a Highway Alignment Optimization Method in an I-BIM Environment

2019

The BIM (Building Information Modeling) approach potential in the civil engineering field opened novel scenarios in the design idea concept, from planning to executive and constructive phases. The related advantages are numerous and not only limited to a real-time interaction among the involved subjects, that can actually operate in an optimized 3D shared environment. Owing to the sharing information philosophy and to the features of various "smart objects" combined in the project, this innovation reduces potential errors and increases the effectiveness of the design solution in terms of both functionality and cost. Despite these advantages, the highway alignment design problem remains very…

The Death of the Subject in David Lynch's Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive

2003

A PSO algorithm for designing 3d highway alignments adopting polynomial solutions

2017

Intelligent optimization algorithms for highway alignments have produced good results so far. However, considering the numerous constraints and factors directly implied in the infrastructure design, the researchers' efforts usually focus only on simplifying the alignment choice, supporting engineers in the design phase. Implementing strategic considerations regarding comfort and safety would be also very important. In this paper, the authors propose a method for designing improved 3D highway alignments using a specific optimization algorithm, based on a Swarm Intelligence technique, adopting an innovative polynomial transition curve as the unique horizontal curvature element, called PPC (Po…

Autopia revisited

2013
